Social Determinants and Employer Health Plans

As employers seek to improve the overall wellbeing of their employees, the social determinants of health play a large role. Social determinants are the economic and social conditions in which people are born, live, work, and age that affect their access to healthcare and other services. Factors such as education, income level, environment, housing, and access to resources often correlate with social determinants.

Employers have a significant role in impacting social determinants of employee health by providing benefits that go beyond traditional healthcare coverage. In addition to offering medical insurance plans that cover preventive care such as annual physicals and mammograms, employers can also provide programs that help employees manage chronic diseases like diabetes or hypertension. Other targeted resources might focus on mental health or substance abuse issues, or assist with financial literacy or job training.

Another way employers can address social determinants is by implementing policies that create an inclusive workplace culture where all employees feel safe and respected regardless of race or gender identity. This can go beyond state mandated anti-harassment training, to include things like implicit bias training for managers and providing paid leave for new parents. Investing in these types of initiatives not only helps create a more equitable workplace but it also has the potential to improve employee morale which could lead to better overall health outcomes for individuals and teams alike.

Employers should also consider the impact their own offices may have on employee health. Offices should be designed with ergonomics in mind so that sitting at a desk all day does not cause undue strain on an individual’s body. Additionally, offering snacks or meals during work hours can help curb cravings for unhealthy foods like chips or candy bars while helping employees maintain adequate energy throughout the day. Finally, providing ample break areas where staff members can get up from their desks and move around can help relieve stress and encourage physical activity which are both important components of any wellness plan.

Overall, there are many ways employers can use social determinants of health to create a healthier environment for their staff members while also improving productivity and morale within their organization. From offering comprehensive benefits packages to creating inclusive workplaces and encouraging physical activity throughout the day, the possibilities are numerous.
